From Nigeria to Texas: How One Family Is Bringing a Life Saving Mission to Arlington, TX

When Rosaline Ogbechie and her husband first left Nigeria to pursue graduate studies in Scotland, they never imagined their journey would eventually lead them to opening a Water Wings Swim School in Texas. Yet every step along the way was guided by one question that would shape their future: How can we make a meaningful difference for families?

After completing graduate school, the couple settled in Texas, where Rosaline built a successful career in corporate accounting while her husband worked as a subsea engineer. Although they were building rewarding careers, they always shared a dream of returning to Nigeria to create something that would improve lives in their home country.

"We always told ourselves we were going to go back to Nigeria and do something for our community," Rosaline said.

Rather than choosing a business first, they chose a mission. They began researching the greatest needs in Nigeria, looking at the leading causes of death to determine where they could make the greatest impact. They quickly realized that while issues like transportation and healthcare required expertise or government intervention, one challenge aligned perfectly with an opportunity they could solve: drowning.

At the very same time, their own children were learning to swim in an indoor heated swim school in Scotland.

"We looked at ourselves and said there is nothing like this in Nigeria."

That realization changed the course of their lives.

The couple built a dedicated indoor swim school in Nigeria, introducing a concept that had not previously existed in their community. What they expected to be a successful business quickly became something much larger. Families who had never had access to professional swim instruction were learning essential water safety skills, children were gaining confidence, and parents were finding peace of mind knowing their children could safely enjoy the water.

"After building the swim school, we didn't even understand the impact that was going to create."

Watching that impact unfold inspired Rosaline to make another life changing decision. She left her corporate career to pursue her passion full time.

"I told my husband, this is what I want to do. I want to build swim schools. I want to create an impact."

As they prepared to expand their vision in Texas, they evaluated nearly every major swim school franchise. They spoke with multiple brands, comparing business models, support systems, and leadership teams. What ultimately drew them to Water Wings Swim School was not just the business itself but the people behind it.

Being part of the Unleashed Brands platform immediately stood out because it represented an organization committed to helping children grow through meaningful enrichment experiences. Just as importantly, meeting Water Wings Brand President Avi Shafshak gave Rosaline confidence that she had found the right partner.

"It is not really about what you do. It is who you are."

She admired the passion Avi brought to the business, along with the fact that he had successfully grown multiple swim schools himself.

"That is somebody who could be a mentor to us."

For Rosaline, franchise ownership was never about simply purchasing a business. It was about joining a system built by people who had already achieved the success she hoped to replicate while remaining committed to the same mission that inspired her years ago.

That mission now continues in Mansfield, Texas, where Rosaline will open her Water Wings Swim School this September.

While many people associate swim lessons with young children, Rosaline has a broader vision for the community she hopes to serve. Having grown up in Nigeria herself, she understands that many adults, particularly immigrants, never had the opportunity to learn how to swim.

"Some adults say they just didn't learn how to swim."

She plans to actively welcome those families into her school, helping both children and adults develop confidence in the water while learning skills that could one day save their lives.

She also saw a gap within the Mansfield community itself. While there are facilities that offer swim lessons, few provide a dedicated indoor environment designed exclusively for swimming instruction across all age groups. Water Wings offers something different by focusing entirely on teaching, safety, and student progression in a purpose-built facility.

"I think having a dedicated site that is solely for swimming makes a difference."

The mission extends beyond the business because the business itself creates measurable community impact. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning remains the leading cause of death for children ages 1 through 4 and the second leading cause of unintentional injury death for children ages 5 through 14 in the United States. Formal swim lessons have also been shown to reduce drowning risk among young children, making access to high quality swim instruction more important than ever.

For entrepreneurs, that need creates a compelling business opportunity. Water safety is not seasonal, and parents continue investing in swim instruction because it provides a lifelong skill rather than a short term activity. Weekly lessons create recurring relationships with families while giving franchise owners the opportunity to make a genuine difference in their communities.

Rosaline believes those relationships are what make the business so rewarding.

"I'm excited to see children, parents, and adults walk into the academy and learn."

Her story is a reminder that the most successful franchise owners are often driven by something greater than business ownership alone. They see an opportunity to solve meaningful problems, strengthen their communities, and create a legacy that extends well beyond their own families.

From opening one of Nigeria's first dedicated indoor swim schools to preparing for her grand opening in Mansfield, Rosaline has remained focused on one goal: helping more people gain the confidence and life saving skills that come from learning to swim.

For Water Wings Swim School, that mission represents exactly what the brand stands for. For entrepreneurs looking to own a purpose driven business backed by a proven franchise system, it is also a powerful example of the impact one owner can make.
